A Chandra observation of the H 2 O megamaser IC 2560

چکیده
A short Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 2560, which hosts a luminous nuclear water megamaser, shows: 1) the X-ray emission is extended; 2) the X-ray spectrum shows emission features in the soft (E < 2 keV) X-ray band; this is the major component of the extended emission; and 3) a very strong (EW∼ 3.6 keV) iron Kα line at 6.4 keV on a flat continuum. This last feature clearly indicates that the X-ray source is hidden behind Compton-thick obscuration, so that the intrinsic hard X-ray luminosity must be much higher than the observed, probably close to ∼ 3 × 10 42 erg s −1. We briefly discuss the implications for powering of the maser emission and the central source.

Rotation and outflow in the central kiloparsec of the water - megamaser galaxies IC 2560 , NGC 1386 , NGC 1052 , and Mrk 1210 ?
Optical emission-line profiles were evaluated in order to explore the structure of galactic nuclei containing H2O megamaser sources. Long-slit spectra of IC 2560, NGC1386, NGC1052 and Mrk 1210 were obtained at ∼ 100 km/s spectral and ∼ 2′′ × 2′′ spatial resolution. The following individual properties of the objects were found: The active nucleus of IC2560 (innermost ±2′′) emits lines typical fo...

We present preliminary results of an interferometric study of the water megamaser in the merger system Arp 299. This system is composed of two main sources: IC 694 and NGC 3690. There is clear evidence that most of the water maser emission is associated with the nucleus of the latter, confirming the presence of an optically obscured AGN as previously suggested by X-ray observations. Furthermore...
متن کاملChandra and Hst Confirmation of the Luminous and Variable X-ray Source Ic 10 X-1 as a Possible Wolf-rayet, Black-hole Binary
We present a Chandra and HST study of IC 10 X-1, the most luminous X-ray binary in the closest starburst galaxy to the Milky Way. Our new hard X-ray observation of X-1 confirms that it has an average 0.5–10 keV luminosity of 1.5× 1038 erg s−1, is strongly variable (a factor of ≈2 in .3 ks), and is spatially coincident (within 0.23±0.30) with the Wolf-Rayet (WR) star [MAC92] 17A in IC 10. The sp...
متن کاملObservation of Nonthermal Emission from the Supernova Remnant Ic 443 with Rxte
In this paper we present analysis of X-ray spectra from the supernova remnant IC 443 obtained using the PCA on RXTE. The spectra in the 3 20 keV band are well fit by a two-component model consisting of thermal and nonthermal components. We compare these results with recent results of other X-ray missions and discuss the need for a cut-off in the nonthermal spectrum. Recent Chandra and XMM-Newto...

We report new observations of the H 2 O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. Following our initial detection in 2000 March using the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, re-analysis of previous data on this source indicates that the maser was present but only marginally detectable in late 1997. Monitoring through late 2000 shows that the maser has again decreased to its original level. The H 2 O l...
